Flip Camcorder provides easy access to video

by Andy DeSoto on August 17, 2008

Just a few days ago I wrote a post emphasizing how necessary different types of multimedia are for an optimal lifestreaming and social media experience.  As I continued to think about this topic, I decided to actually practice what I preach for a change, went to my local Circuit City, and picked up a neon orange Flip Ultra camcorder.

The handheld delight is so much fun I’ve almost forgotten to blog!  I took it out to a Washington Nationals baseball game last night and put it to work in the varied conditions of the brand new Nationals Park.  Catch my test video after the cut.

As you can see, results are pretty decent, especially for something as tiny and cheap as the Flip.  Now, if only it could stream!

I will be moving back onto campus over the next two weeks or so.  If you notice a decreased posting rate, don’t worry; it’s only temporary until I get set back up in Williamsburg.  Thanks for understanding!

So after using it for a couple weeks, what do you think?

What are the good and bad things about it?

Sorry it’s taken me a while to reply! I like it a lot, but still haven’t had as much time to play with it as I’d like. Pulling out a video camera and filming requires crossing a social (and mental!) boundary whether the camera’s enormous or tiny, and I’m still getting used to recording more in public.

In the meantime, though, its advantages are that it’s quick, fast, small, convenient, takes great audio, and does surprisingly well video-wise too. My biggest guff is the proprietary software on-board the device. If you ignore it, which you can do, some things start acting up. It seems best just to work through that software, regardless of how clunky it might be.

What software did you use to edit your video? I just got a Flip Ultra (pink, not orange) but haven’t had time to put clips together. From what I can tell, the Flip software is pretty basic and I’m hoping to have more freedom & creative allowance when editing. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Believe it or not, Lauren, I just used Windows Movie Maker to put this little clip together. It’s actually a relatively solid program that provides just enough tools on top of the basic Flip editing suite (text, finer audio controls, transitions, and more) to be useful. I don’t know what else you can nab that’s free of charge; iMovie, if you’re a Mac user, would probably be pretty useful as well.

Congratulations on your recent purchase! You’ll love it. :-)
